_Position Summary_

In collaboration with other management personnel in the laboratory matrix structure, develop and manage specimen testing processes in the Specialist’s area of expertise. Maintain a set of balanced scorecard metrics and maintain an understanding of IT systems and data sources associated with hospital laboratory services. Develop the training and competency programs for testing personnel.

_Minimum Education Requirements_

  • BS in chemical, physical, or clinical lab/medical technology

_Minimum Experience Requirements_

  • 5 years MT or MLT experience, including 3 years hospital management, metrics scorecard development, experience with quality assurance, statistical quality control, and laboratory regulations/accreditation requirements, experience with managing complex programs with accountability for measured outcomes

_License/Certifications_

  • ASCP Certification or equivalent – required

  • MBA - desirable

  • Certified in Specialty Area (ASCP) – desirable

  • Certified Project Manager --desirable

  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt –desirable

_Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )_

Information Technology

  • Maintain an understanding of the lab LIS from a user and optimization standpoint.

  • Maintain an understanding of the accuracy and source of data that enters the LIS (both electronic and manual entry).

  • Maintain an understanding of the hospital HIS as it relates to the delivery of laboratory services.

  • Maintain an understanding of the accuracy and source of data that enters the HIS as it relates to the delivery of laboratory services.

  • Maintain an understanding of the purchasing system from a user and optimization standpoint.

  • Maintain an understanding of the accuracy and source of data that enters the purchasing system as it relates to the delivery of laboratory services within the hospital lab.

  • Give feedback to IT for any systems changes that would improve processes

Process Management

  • Operationalize policies and procedures developed by Centura Laboratory Services.

  • Establish policies and procedures necessary for site-specific processes in conjunction with the Medical Director, Technical Director, Lab Directors, and Quality Director.

  • Ensure efficient daily operation of the testing processes including quality control and quality assurance.

  • Perform supervisory review of QC data monthly.

  • Ensure that process performance metrics meet internal goals and the expectations of the customers of various hospital services.

  • Manage reagent utilization rates and ensure that instruments are optimized to meet customer requirements and to minimize excessive reagent use.

  • Ensure that testing processes are designed to meet the “voice of the customer”.

  • Ensure that specimen collection requirements for each testing procedure are detailed in the SOP and LIS.

  • Plan and direct all instrument validations.

  • Ensure that all tests are monitored through appropriate proficiency testing programs when required

Leadership

  • Ensure compliance with all rules, regulations, and guidelines of CLIA, CAP, JCAHO, Medicare, etc.

  • Use six sigma methodology with all management practices.

  • Maintain a high level of proficiency and current knowledge of trends in methodology, technology, and ways to deliver service in regards to laboratory medicine.

  • Develop appropriate performance and operational reports for Centura and Hospital administration and others.

  • Lead teams to achieve set objectives.

Customer Relationships

  • Represent Centura Laboratory Services in hospital and medical staff committee meetings as required.*

  • Consults with medical, nursing and administrative staff on a regular basis to coordinate and improve patient care as required.*

  • Handle and resolve customer complaints in a timely manner.*

  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with other hospital divisions and medical staff.*

Finance

  • Develop and implement action plans on any unfavorable trends in reagent utilization along with the Technical Director and Lab Directors.

  • Advise the Lab Directors of any changes needed in annual supply budgets.

  • Develop and implement action plans on any unfavorable trends on spending

Strategy

  • Manage a set of scorecard metrics that give a balanced view of testing performance.

  • Conduct on-going assessments in conjunction with the Medical Director, Technical Director and Laboratory Directors of test menus and test methodologies to ensure that Centura provides optimal service for patient care.

  • Develop hospital best practices in conjunction with the Medical Directors and Technical Director.

_Physical Requirements_

  • Sedentary Work - prolonged periods of sitting and exert/lift up to 10 lbs. force occasionally
