The Histology Assistant help Histologists and Pathologists obtain and analyze tissue specimens from patients in order to diagnose and treat diseases.
_Minimum Education Requirements_
High School Diploma or GED required.
1 year vocational certificate or Associates in Medical Assisting preferred.
_Minimum Experience Requirements_
- 1 year related experience preferred
_Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )_
Develops high level of proficiency and current knowledge through on the job training. *
Participates in examinations to test proficiency. *
Prepare for and pass required Histology Technologist Certification exam.*
Processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by using appropriate, predetermined methods for fixing, embedding, sectioning, staining and mounting. *
Prepares tissues for gross examination.*
Assists pathologist in dictation and dissection of tissues.*
Assures the best possible diagnostic interpretation by verifying proper identification and handling of all specimens received by Histology department. *
Prepares reagents and stains to meet departmental quality standards. *
Maintains accurate patient information, accession numbers and records on all surgical, autopsy and bone marrow specimens.*
Maintains filing system for rapid and accurate retrieval of all blocks and slides.*
Maintains equipment used for tissue processing and staining, performing troubleshooting and minor maintenance and repair.*
Maintains open communication with supervisor, pathologists, and co-workers to ensure optimal operation of department.*
- Light Work - exert/lift up to 20 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently
