_Position Summary_

Responsible for oversight of day to day operations of assigned shift or department. Performs all levels of general testing within the analytical laboratory. Provides a high level of technical knowledge and application of that knowledge to department testing and clinical relevance. Functions in a self-directed manner and exhibits complex problem-solving skills.

_Minimum Education Requirements_

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.

Experience Requirements

  • 2-year relevant laboratory work experience


  • MLS with ASCP certification, or MT with ASCP, AMT, or equivalent certification, or specialty ASCP certification

_Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an *)_


  • Responsible for the day to day oversight of technical associates on assigned shifts. May include pre-analytic oversight as determined by site. *

  • Participate in staff scheduling and monitoring of workflow. *

  • Participates in the coordination and completion of training of new associates and students. *

  • Ensures associates meet all safety, compliance and regulatory standards. *

  • Provide input to supervisors on associate performance. *

  • May participate in new associate selection process.

  • Provides input for recognition. *

  • Provides coaching under guidance of supervisor or director. *

  • Responsible for, or has oversight of compiling various reports and resolution of issues. *

  • May be required to participate in laboratory and/or hospital projects, teams, or committees.

  • Attends department, laboratory, and hospital meetings and forums. *

Analytic: Testing and Result Reporting

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment. *

  • Follows laboratory, hospital, and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and guidelines. *

  • Performs all levels of testing within the assigned discipline with a high level of competency. *

  • Performs job duties in an efficient and organized manner within required timeframe. *

  • Demonstrates knowledge and competency of laboratory computer systems. *

  • Responsible for accurate and timely result reporting, including communication and documentation of critical results. *

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills and exercises independent judgment to correlate and interpret data. *

  • Compiles and reviews LIS reports to ensure all samples are collected, processed, and tested in appropriate timeframe. *

  • Assists with resolution of unusual test orders by following up with care giver, reference lab, pathology, referring to lab leadership when appropriate. *

  • Participates in shift to shift communication to ensure continuity of laboratory operations and patient care. *

  • Actively participates in new associate and student training and orientation. *

  • May be assigned lead responsibilities in various disciplines.

  • Participates in inspections. *

Instrumentation, Maintenance, and Quality

  • Responsible for analyzer operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and appropriate documentation of activities. *

  • Completes required QC and maintenance, consistently recognizing variances and documenting appropriate corrective action. *

  • Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures.

Sample Handling/Processing

  • Acknowledges receipt of blood in laboratory information system. *

  • Receives specimens, assesses priority, assures appropriate specimen identification, and appropriate specimen type. May include ordering and processing of hospital registered and outreach patients. *

  • Centrifuges, aliquots, and distributes samples to appropriate testing area.

  • As Defined by Site:

o Prepares samples for off-site testing, to include assessing appropriate sample type, container, and temperature. Completes related paperwork and/or computer documentation. *

o Packages samples for courier transport to off-site testing locations. *

o Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures. *


  • Acts as a steward of finances through appropriate uses of supplies, materials, and productive activities. *

  • Adheres to assigned schedule while responding to work load demands and staffing needs by maintaining flexibility. *

  • Recognizes and provides input for opportunities to improve productivity, lab workflow, supply management, and cost containment. *

_Customer Relations_

  • Serves as a liaison with other laboratory departments and hospital services. *

  • Responds to customer inquiries for laboratory results, status of patient testing, test requirements, and other laboratory information. *

  • Consistently monitors Centura email account and provides timely response or action when appropriate. *

  • Maintains inter- and intra-department relations by appropriate communication, teamwork, and cooperation. *

  • Handles and resolves customer complaints in a timely manner, referring when appropriate. *

  • Assumes and demonstrates management responsibilities in the absence of on-site leadership. *

  • Takes call as defined by site. *

_Physical Requirements_

  • Light Work - exert/lift up to 20 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently)
