*Position Summary*

A leadership position responsible for operational management of the laboratory. Responsible for direct leadership of department associates. Performs testing within the analytical laboratory. Provides a high level of technical knowledge and application of that knowledge to department testing and clinical relevance. Functions in a self- directed manner and exhibits advanced problem-solving skills.

*Minimum Education Requirements*

Associate’s degree in biology, laboratory science or equivalent required.

Bachelor’s degree in biology, laboratory science or equivalent preferred.

*Minimum Experience Requirements*

3 years CT, HT, or HLT working experience in the clinical laboratory


HT with ASCP certification, or HLT with ASCP certification, or CT with ASCP certification, or equivalent certification.

*Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )*

  • Responsible for operational management of the laboratory, including direct leadership of associates.*

  • Responsible for staff scheduling and monitoring ofworkflow.*

  • Responsible for the coordination and completion of training of newassociates.*

  • Responsible for ensuring staff competency assessments are met andcompleted.*

  • Ensures that staff meets all safety, compliance and regulatorystandards.*

  • Responsible for associate selection, hiring, training, performance appraisals, recognition, coaching, and corrective action.*

  • Investigates and resolves occurrence reports.*

  • Responsible for, or has oversight of, compiling various reports and resolution of issues.*

  • Actively involved in inspections and followup.*

  • Maintains clinical skills and competencies to assist on bench asneeded.*

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, PDCA or other process improvement tools. Participates inquality improvement projects.*

  • May be required to participate in or lead laboratory and/or hospital projects, teams, orcommittees.

  • Attends department, laboratory, and hospital meetings andforums.*

  • Responsible for review of QC, maintenance, calibrations, validations, reagent verification,downtime metrics, and other department documentation.*

  • Assists with coordination of implementation and validation of newinstruments.*

  • Ensures that proficiency testing is completed and submitted. Coordinates and completes proficiency testing investigation follow up.*

  • Reviews various laboratory reports including QM reports and others asassigned.*

  • Monitors quality metrics and processes to meet goals. Facilitates investigation, follow up and retraining with associates as needed.*

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment.*

  • Follows laboratory, hospital, and regulatory agencies policies, procedures, and guidelines.*

  • Performs all levels of testing within the cytology discipline with a high level of competency.*

  • Performs job duties in an efficient and organized manner within required timeframe.*

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills to correlate and interpret data.*

  • Responsible for accurate and timely result reporting, including communication and documentation of significant results.*

  • Demonstrates problem resolution and decision making skills for any operational andtechnical problems.*

  • Assist with resolution of unusual test orders by following up with care giver, reference lab, pathology, referring to lab leadership when appropriate.*

  • Compiles and reviews LIS reports to ensure all samples are collected and processed in appropriate timeframe.*

  • Participates in shift to shift communication to ensure continuity of laboratory operations and patient care.*

  • Responsible for instrument/equipment operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and appropriate documentation of activities.*

  • Completes required QC and maintenance, consistently recognizing variances,documenting appropriate corrective action.*

  • Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from definedprocedures.*

  • Acts as a steward of finances through appropriate uses of supplies, materials, and productive activities.*

  • Recognizes and provides input for opportunities to improve supply management, lab workflow, and cost containment.*

  • Responsible for meeting and maintaining targeted productivitystandards.*

  • Provides assistance in monitoring financial activities and budgetdevelopment.*

  • Serves as a liaison with other laboratory departments and hospital services.*

  • Responds to customer inquiries for laboratory results, status of patient testing, test requirements, and other laboratory information.*

  • Consistently monitors Centura email account and provides timely response when appropriate.*

  • Maintains inter- and intra-department relations by appropriate communication, teamwork,and cooperation.*

  • Handles and resolves customer complaints in a timely manner, referring whenappropriate.*

*Physical Requirements*
