_Position Summary_

This position carries the primary authority and responsibility to provide spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families and staff. This includes the coordination of spiritual care within a team and community setting. It also carries the responsibility for all CPE educational requirements.

_Minimum Education Requirements_

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required

_Minimum Experience Requirements_

  • Theological training and a minimum of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education

_Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an *_ )


  • Responsible for daily operations and the achievement of standards related to quality care, customer satisfaction and fiscally responsible delivery of services.*


  • Assists patient and loved ones with major health decisions. Helps clarify moral, medical/ethical issues.*

  • Promotes and develops the coordination of care - Ability to participate in interdisciplinary conferences, contributing significant data for comprehensive and holistic care/treatment plan.*

  • Provides consistent care in clinical setting, including regular patient, loved ones, Associate and physician visitation, and rounds with and checks in with staff regularly in assigned areas.*

  • Appropriately responds to all Code Blues and other emergencies, verifying patient identity, engaging and supporting family, coordinating with staff, family and legal authorities.*

  • Retains personal and professional perspective, faith, and compassion under extreme emotional stress as well as professional boundaries in all pastoral care interactions.*

  • Documents/charts and completes all paperwork with pastoral activities and in compliance with hospital, state and federal regulations.*

  • Provides information on Advance Medical Directives.*

  • Is trained or accepting of training as an Organ and Tissue Requestor and effectively works as a designated Requestor.*

  • Collaboratively works with Spiritual Care’s/Mission and Ministry staff.*

  • Leads, conducts worship services, spiritual reflections, and devotions as assigned or needed within assigned clinical areas and hospital, and CPE program.*


  • Adheres to budget guidelines set forth by supervisor.*


  • Provides for the spiritual care and emotional support for patients, their families, Associates and Physicians within the organization. Assesses the spiritual and emotional needs of patients to assist the healing process as part of a holistic team – ability to conduct a multi-faceted assessment of patient.*

  • Provides focused attention to patients, loved ones and staff without agenda, i.e. effectively listens and responds to patients, loved ones and Associates and Physicians with compassion and empathy.*

  • Assists patients, loved ones and staff in articulating their struggles as well as their inner resources of strength, meaning, faith and hope i.e. ability to explore options and help patient and loved ones identify and manage next step on journey.*


  • Is self-aware of own biases, able and growing in professional comfort and empathy in caring for people’s diverse needs, backgrounds, and situations (ex. The elderly, abuse, addicted, as well as ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity.*

  • Demonstrates a willingness to examine, reflect on, and develop new self-awareness of the theological and spiritual issues and interpersonal dynamics arising from pastoral experiences.*

  • Sedentary Work - prolonged periods of sitting and exert/lift up to 10 lbs. force occasionally)
