_Position Summary_

The Medication Coordinator will be responsible for the ordering and maintaining of all drugs and supplies needed for the oncology practice, sensitive to cost and meeting the yearly drug budget. The coordinator will be responsible for mixing chemotherapy daily for all treatment patients and will also assist in drug prior authorizations with insurance companies. The coordinator will demonstrate technical skill level in utilizing a variety of pharmaceutical competencies including, but not limited to, calculations, aseptic technique and cytotoxic drug precautions in compliance with hospital regulations.

_Minimum Education Requirements_

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

_Minimum Experience Requirements_

  • Minimum of three years of chemotherapy drug mixing experience.


  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification

_Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )_

  • Accurately and in a timely manner prepares and manages medications to ensure availability of ordered drugs. *

  • On a monthly basis, checks clinic medications for outdates, overstock, and proper storage to ensure the use of high quality medications. *

  • Demonstrates technical skill level in utilizing a variety of pharmaceutical competencies including, but not limited to, calculations, aseptic technique and cytotoxic drug properties. *

  • Provides teaching for the patient and family based on assessed needs, using appropriate resources. *

  • Serves as focal point of contact for medication preparation, ordering, and inventory related questions. *

  • Answers all questions and issues concerning the system and appropriately refer in-house concerns to the clinic management or hospital pharmacy director. *

  • Coordinate the implementation of new Pyxis equipment and software, working with the Pyxis Application Specialist. *

  • Demonstrates troubleshooting skills and knowledge in addressing a wide range of equipment malfunctions in a timely manner. *

  • Identifies problems that require referral to the Pyxis Service Center and coordinate communication with appropriate service personnel. *

  • Serves as an education resource for existing staff regarding safe medication practices, chemotherapy preparations, proper use of PPE, and equipment issues. *

  • Participates in the orientation of new staff to the Pyxis equipment. *

  • Assists pharmacy and clinic leadership in the development of competency tools for the staff. *

  • Alerts pharmacy manager, nurse coordinator, or practice management of immediate problems requiring corrective action in a timely manner. *

  • Resolves problems associated with personal computer software and continually grows in knowledge and understanding of such. *

  • Attains professional growth by attending or participating in a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education annually. *

  • Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly
