_Position Summary_

The RN Educator is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates expertise in clinical nursing. Assumes accountability and responsibility for provision of professional development to positively influence the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care. Responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a program of education. Programming includes initial and ongoing staff competency (including a standardized nursing orientation), as well as continued education as identified by needs assessments and regulatory requirement initiatives. Applies policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate to their populations. The scope of the education will be determined through collaborative practice with leadership, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care; assumes the role of an educator, facilitator, consultant, researcher and change agent.

_Minimum Education Requirements_

  • Bachelor's in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited School of Nursing program.

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN), Education, or other related graduate field of study preferred.

_Minimum Experience Requirements_

  • Five years of experience in nursing.

  • Two years of staff development, academic teaching and /or project development coordination preferred.

  • Requires advanced knowledge in nursing, evidence-based practice methods, and person-centered care concepts.


  • Current Colorado RN license/ Current RN license from a participating state in National Licensure Compact.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association required.

  • Professional certification preferred.

  • Demonstrates progress in obtaining staff development certification within one year of meeting eligibility requirements.

_Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an *)_

  • Acts as a change agent in support of house wide education initiatives.

  • Acts as a member of the education support team for management of quality and regulatory initiatives and projects.

  • Advances healthcare practice by developing and integrating policies, procedures and standards by being familiar with company-wide policies and procedures.

  • Is knowledgeable in current healthcare trends and related legislative issues.

  • Incorporates evidence-based practice and adult learning theory in project and course content.

  • Identifies educational needs and opportunities using data from the organization such as regulatory requirements survey information as well as employee and customer evaluation data.

  • Collaborates with staff and management in differentiating between educational versus performance/compliance issues in order to design an effective plan of action.

  • Seeks out continuous learning opportunities and continuing education in areas of staff development and clinical expertise.

  • Demonstrates competent in the use of technology.

  • Utilizes Scope and Standards of Nursing Professional Development.

  • Plans and facilitates education initiatives/classes/events that benefit the staff in collaboration with department specific leadership, to include but not limited to the annual competency validation, staff orientation, residency training program, specialty practice training classes, preceptor class, and outside committee participation

  • Evaluates the quality of programs and services offered, including class evaluations and incorporation of feedback into program improvement.

  • Responsible to track course statistics and maintain documentation of educational activities including, but not limited to, evaluation data, attendance numbers and types, completion or success scores, etc.

  • Identifies and evaluates appropriate products, programs, and services, based upon needs assessment for populations served; for planning of or improving of educational offerings.

  • Collaborates with managers and key clinical stakeholders to identify educational needs of staff regarding nursing care and/or equipment as it relates to quality patient care.

  • Presents education programs/continuing education activities as needed.

  • Participates in organizational clinical competency committee meetings as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates clinical skills, judgment, and nursing process in the management of patient populations.

  • Provides feedback to RN department focused educators who participate in unit, hospital, system committee/task force to maintain and improve the delivery of patient care.

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to address deficiencies identified in the documentation audits.

  • Participates at Centura system level education related committees as appropriate.

  • Plans, evaluates, and implements program changes to maximize organizational resources and demonstrate best return on investment for the organization.

  • Responsible to work collaboratively with management/leadership, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care.

  • Utilizes principles of communication and change theory in providing health care consultation to other departments and staff; specifically, in areas of training/education/program development and associate development.

  • Functions as a role model for excellence in care by assisting associates with decision making in clinical situations.

  • Assesses learning needs, designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates education programs (orientation, continuing education, and in-services) that facilitate professional growth, knowledge and skill development, competency, applicable standards and attainment of standards of care for direct care providers. Maintains accountability for integrating the multidisciplinary process in assessment, problem identification, planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating professional development processes in partnership with clinical managers, nursing leadership, department focused educators, and nursing associates.

  • Works with leaders to plan and deploy essential and just-in-time training.

  • Plans, oversees, and participates in competency validation of nursing and other clinical associates.

  • Coordinates and/or participates in committees as appropriate to strategy initiatives.

  • Conducts designed education offerings in a professional and organized manner.

  • Serves as a member of the education team for management of quality and regulatory standards.

  • Provides input to management regarding identification of individual staff skills as it relates to staff performance.

  • Enhances professional development and quality of care through observation, verbal critique and coaching, and written appraisal of staff.

  • Facilitates the integration of quality improvement activities into nursing practice.

  • Identifies barriers to learning and facilitates solutions to remove those barriers.

  • Collaborates and functions effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams; fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality and cost-efficient patient care.

  • Ensures active advertising/marketing of educational in-services and programs throughout the organization to facilitate maximum session participation.

  • Provides consultative services within area(s) of specialty to other departments as it relates to organizational education needs.

  • Implements a professional self-development plan to ensure competencies in quality care, adult learning theory and professional development.

  • Participates in professional organization(s).

  • Collaborates with community, state, and national resources and applicable governing boards in developing and implementing best practice in educational standards.

  • Assists with assessing, planning, coordinating, and evaluating processes related to nursing student clinical rotations as applicable.

  • Markets educational opportunities (classes, conferences, etc.) to the nursing community as appropriate.

  • Collaborates with the Centura System educators to provide equitable continuing education opportunities to staff and the community.

_Physical Requirements_

Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
